Alexandra Fullerton picks her favourite pieces from the Smart Works Fashion Sale: eBay edition. image

Alexandra Fullerton is one of British fashion’s oracles. Published author, freelance stylist and currently Fashion Director at Large at Glamour UK, Alex has an impressive CV that makes her more than qualified to give you advice on your next purchase.

Knowing this we asked Alex to take a look at the current edit available on our eBay shop and pick out her favourite pieces.

This is what she chose:

Bottega Veneta bag

Bottega Veneta has a huge buzz around it, since new Creative Director Daniel Lee took the helm. He’s reinvented their signature woven leather, which has seen their pieces become modern icons. This slouchy Hobo style will house all your everyday essentials and the peppy green shade will uplift any Spring outfit.

Dior scarf

A silk scarf is one of the most versatile items you can add to your wardrobe. Tie it around your neck, wear as a headband, thread through your belt loops, twist around the handles of a handbag… Or if you’re drawn to the pattern, frame it and hang it on your wall as a work of art!

Burberry coat

Due to our idiosyncratic British weather, coats are as integral to your outfit as underwear. For 75% of the year your coat is likely to be the thing people notice when they meet you, so choose a style that speaks volumes about your personality. A Burberry trench with a colourful twist will be a forever buy that will last many seasons.  (Edit: This coat has now sold, but keep an eye out, there are more to come).

Thanks you to Alexandra for picking out some beautiful pieces and proving that pre-loved can by high-end and high quality.

If you’re looking for a way to update your wardrobe and support women in need then please check out the Smart Works eBay store. It’s updated with designer pieces every week and there’s always something new on offer.

Our wonderful dressing team work with our clients to curate the perfect outfit, packed into a box with love, care and a supportive smile, and delivered straight to their door.  Interview coaching is delivered virtually by a trained coach.

Thank you to the many woman who have kindly donated clothing to our wardrobes.  We will continue to accept donations by post and courier, however we ask that you refrain from dropping them off yourself.

The next few months will be challenging, but we’re better prepared than ever before to make sure we can be there for our clients at a vital moment in their lives.

Thank you to everyone in our community for their positivity, passion and commitment to our charity.

Give the Gift of Confidence this Christmas image

As we approach the festive season, we are encouraging all to join us and Give the Gift of Confidence, celebrating Smart Works clients, family, friends and colleagues alike.

2020 has not been kind, with redundancies reaching an all-time high in September, and higher unemployment on the horizon. As people look to get back to work, the need for our service has never been greater, and we need your support in making sure we can be there to help any woman who needs our help.

The Smart Works service builds women’s confidence from the outside in. When we feel and look smart it shows; we build better relationships and feel motivated and resilient, setting us up for the best mindset to land that job.

We know feeling confident works – 65% of the women who visit Smart Works go on to get a job within one month of their appointment.

We’re asking that you to help us Give the Gift of confidence this Christmas. By supporting us, you will help transform the life of a woman by giving her the opportunity to discover the confidence to succeed.

Join the fun

Over the coming weeks, there are several ways you can get involved and help us raise vital funds:

The Smart Works Annual Report 2019/20 image

Today we released the Smart Works Charity Annual Report for the financial year ending March 2020.

At Smart Works, we judge our success by the difference that we make to the lives of the women we support. This year’s annual report is a wonderful reminder of all the ways we found to support our clients between April 2019 and March 2020.

Above all, we were able to help more women to succeed at their job interviews. In 12 months our Service grew and we supported almost 4,000 women across the UK, an increase of 21% on the previous year.

We also welcomed a new team when we opened our newest centre in Leeds, meaning more women in Yorkshire can now access our service.

The launch of the Smart Set with our Patron, The Duchess of Sussex, filled our wardrobes for months to come with the perfect workwear essentials and helped give us a new way to think of charity as community. Thank you to the amazing partners who helped bring this to life: Jigsaw, John Lewis & Partners, Marks & Spencer and Misha Nonoo.

The seventh Pretty Powerful collection launched with our partners Bobbi Brown and hundreds of riders got on their bike for our annual cycling challenge. We couldn’t go the year without a big shopping event and the Stella X Smart Works Big Fashion Sale at Somerset House which raised a record-breaking amount. This is in addition to the many events that took place all over the country, raising vital funds to support our work.

Since then, and despite the most challenging circumstances, there hasn’t been a day that we haven’t helped a woman in need.

Our Chair, Juliet Hughes-Hallett, put it perfectly when she said, “I am proud of our wonderful charity. Across the land Smart Works centres have risen to the challenge of helping to transform women’s lives by getting a job. And will continue to do so.”

You can find out more about the highlights from last year by reading the annual report here.

Another successful referrer open afternoon image

Yesterday we were excited to host another of our virtual referrer open afternoons here at Smart Works.

Since the start of lockdown our staff team have been busy organising these online events for our community of partner organisations. Bringing everyone together to provide insights and updates on our service has never been more important, particularly as we begin to welcome clients through our doors for in-person appointments again.

Hundreds of organisations have participated over the last few months, and yesterday we saw another 40 partners come along to hear the latest on our service from our North London centre manager, Sophie.

It is by working with these frontline organisations from all corners of the country that we are able to reach the women who need us most. To find out more about how to partner with us and refer women to our service, drop us an email at info@smartworks.org.uk.

Thank you to everyone who took part and to all of our referral partners across the country – we couldn’t do it without you.

An exclusive screening of Misbehaviour for the Smart Works Fashion Club image

The Smart Works Fashion Club presents an exclusive screening of new film, Misbehaviour and Q&A with Director, Philippa Lowthorpe

Last night on the 11th March, we were pleased to host our first Fashion Club event of 2020, with a preview of the brilliant new film, Misbeahviour.

Fashion Club members were treated to an exclusive screening of the film followed by a Q&A with the Director, Philippa Lowthorpe, hosted by Tiffanie Darke.

Guests heard about the challenges of sensitively portraying the stories of the women in this heart-warming story while balancing the drastically different points of view of the pageant entrants and the women’s liberation movement. Philippa also talked about the challenges of being a female director and her work to mentor women in her industry.

Thank you to Philippa for telling such an important historical story and sharing the film with our Fashion Club members and thank you to the brilliant team at Pathe UK who made this evening possible.

If you’re interested in hearing more about the Fashion Club and what members get, click here.

Misbehaviour opens in cinemas on the 13th March.
