Volunteering at Smart Works

Smart Works is powered by a community of highly skilled volunteers who offer their time, talents and kindness to help our clients at a crucial moment in their lives.

We provide an Interview Dressing and Preparation service to all our clients who have an interview lined up. For clients who haven’t secured an interview yet, we offer a Career Coaching service to assist them with their CV, cover letters, and skills development.

All of our dressing and coaching is delivered by a trained team of empathetic, talented people across the UK. Across our 11 centres, we have a dedicated community of 780 volunteers.

We offer our volunteers access to a wide range of exclusive events including VIP preview evenings for our famous pop-up fashion sales and volunteer socials as well as our monthly volunteer forums and training.

Ways to volunteer

We offer volunteering roles across five key Smart Works departments: wardrobe, dressing, coaching, administration, and outreach. All four departments are essential for us to deliver our vital service to unemployed women across the UK.
Wardrobe
The Smart Works wardrobe is at the heart of our service. Each client receives a professional, boutique dressing experience, where they choose an outfit that makes them feel confident and ready to take on their interview.  Seeing how a woman can grow in confidence just from the clothes she wears is very powerful.

Our wardrobe rooms are designed to be safe, welcoming, and inspiring spaces for our clients. Stock is generously donated by the public, corporate partners and retail partners such as Burberry, Hobbs, Whistles, John Lewis, M&S and more. Our wardrobe volunteers have meticulous attention to detail and passion for organisation, to ensure our donations are efficiently processed and our wardrobes are beautifully organised.
Dressing
Our Dressing volunteers work directly with our clients either in person or over Zoom to help them find the perfect outfit for their interview and give them the confidence they need. They support numerous clients from different backgrounds, working with one or two other volunteers to tailor appointments to each individual client.

We treat every woman as an individual and try to find a style that suits them, there is no one style fits all and that is one of the many challenges and joys of volunteer dressing.
Coaching
Our coaching volunteers equip our clients with advice, tips and skills to help them with next steps towards employment. They work directly with our clients to help them prepare for an upcoming job interview or support them with tangible next steps towards securing an interview if they are currently job searching. Their expertise and empathy helps our clients unlock their self-belief and discover their strengths through one to one 60-minute coaching sessions.

Our coaching volunteers have senior level management experience (HR or recruitment backgrounds are not mandatory). During the coaching sessions, they provide personalised guidance on the interviewing process, CVs, cover letters, skills development and any other aspects of the job search relevant to our clients.
Outreach
Our outreach and community engagement volunteers support the outreach lead with the engagement of our referral partners, ensuring that they are aware of our service and how to refer clients.

They chat to partners and potential clients, attend job fairs and events across the region. The role will include attending career fairs, job centres and employment events, supporting the outreach lead to organise, deliver and attend community outreach events, and speak with potential clients and referral partners about Smart Works in a variety of settings.
Administration
Our admin volunteers play a vital role in the delivery of the Smart Works service through answering telephone enquiries, booking our clients in for appointments and processing sensitive client data. As an admin volunteer, you will be supporting the efficient running of our service so we can continue helping women who need us the most.

Our Admin Volunteers are often the first point of contact for our referral partners and clients, guiding them with empathy and confidence through the referral and booking process.
From time to time, we also have opportunities in Communications and Marketing, Design, and other departments.

“I really enjoy working and volunteering with Smart Works, it's hugely enjoyable and you get a chance to make a positive difference in women's lives. If you've never volunteered before and you are considering volunteering, I would absolutely recommend it. It's a great way to build skills, connect with a whole range of different people, and work with a great organisation.”
